Suicide Prevention Training
A new TIP titled “Managing Depressive Symptoms in Substance Abuse Clients during Early Recovery,” acknowledges the vulnerability of treatment clients to depression . That is not news to most treatment providers. The next step of vulnerability, suicidality, is something also urgent in treatment. Those of us who have been around for a while, have lived through many suicide deaths, feeling inadequate at best. Yet most counselors have not been trained how to prevent suicide. That’s why ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills training), seems like an obvious need. Daystar will offer this two day workshop twice in 2010- Mar 19-20 and Aug. 30-31.
A seasoned clinician and trainer took ASIST as part of becoming a Board Member for the Oregon Partnership (as part of the helpline volunteer training). Their response was “this should be required for all counselors.”
There are many qualified ASIST trainers. It seems the ASIST training typically occurs on site for a particular agency. Daystar offers the opportunity for all counselors to get this training. Given money constraints, many counselors would not have access to this training if they had to depend on their agency.
For 2010 we have over 30 days scheduled for one day workshops.
NEW for 2010: Criminality (May 25), Domestic Violence (April 26)
Not totally new: Gangs:Risk Assessment and Intervention, Treating the African American Client (Both meet cultural diversity requirement for CADC II)., Treating Sexual Addictions, Feb. 24.
And don’t forget: Transforming Grief, Jan. 12, Treating Co-dependency Feb. 22, Resolving Client Shame.
As always, feel free to give input about our educational offerings at nikki@DaystarEd.com. Suggestions that came in have resulted in some of the new workshops. Thank you for your on-going support.
